Ice skating is an Excellent idea during the winter. It’s especially fun at night with a lantern or 3 arouund a pond. Another fun idea is riding snowmobiles/4 wheelers. Winter hiking in areas with winter habitat like deer/birds foxes etc..
Cross Country skiiing is fun even in bad weather.
Down hill skiiing. Sledding, horse back ridding and even visiting the local shooting range.
An idea is that is indoor based is Bowling/ice skating rink, maybe they might enjoy a relaxing dinner & a movie. ( the movie can be a dvd player at home with a home cooked meal or even dinner brought home to eat. A simple KFC diner in a bucket put into nice dinner ware can still look like a good dinner.)
game of chess
poker night as couples so they can mingle as a group, or a uchre club. With 3 or 4 other couples
you can even try a museaum, concert, local sports event like HS basketball.
Hope that helped you a bit.

Day three of my temporary PC-less existence « Johnny Blaze
May 15th, 2012Day three sees me lounging at home in front of the telly instead and using my Samsung galaxy s2 to indulge in my other favourite pastime – scouring HotUKdeals for useful freebies or fun deals to comment on.
After a couple of days of blogging via my SGS2 and the iPad I’ve found that the interface is still clunky. The desktop version is far more fully featured and I’ve linked my WordPress to zemanta to get related links and images quickly.
Boredom settling in? Or just restlessness kicking in?
I did find today rather hard though, as it was the kind of day where I’d fire up my PC and either do some surfing or play one of the many games I’ve picked up over the past couplet of years. Instead, I find myself on my phone strenuously analysing a chess board in one of my online matchups against a strong chess player.
positionally, I’ve got a pretty good position but material is fairly even. Both with two rooks, six pawns and one minor piece. I do have a white square bishop against his knight though. But it’s not easy to press my advantage. We’ll see how that match progresses ![]()
Wifely pursuits
As I write this out on my SGS2 my wife is on the iPad sorting out her etsy account. Annoyingly, several fields can’t be completed due to Apple’s Flash allergy. So she’ll have to complete it using her Sony Xperia Arc since that supports flash.
While we’re on the subject of the iPad, I had a strange error to fix this morning. The iPad was stuck with a spinning circle on the main screen and a black background behind it, like it was perpetually trying to load something. After a quick check on my phone (and temporarily panicking when I thought I had the Spinning Wheel Of Death aka SWOD), I found that I needed to restart the iPad in order for the problem to be fixed. That blew one of my Apple beliefs right out of the water – that Apple products never crash.
That’s all I’ve got to say today – gotta go plot my opponents downfall over the chessboard.

Digital Gadget Magazine » IBM celebrates the 15th anniversary of …
May 12th, 2012It’s been 15 years since IBM’s Deep Blue recorded its famous May 11th 1997 victory over world champion chess player Garry Kasparov — a landmark in artificial intelligence. Designed by Big Blue as a way of understanding high-power parallel processing, the “brute force” system could examine 200 million chess positions every second, beating the grandmaster 3.5-2.5 after losing 4-2 the previous year. It went on to help develop drug treatments, analyze risk and aid data miners before being replaced with Blue Gene and, more recently, Watson — which recorded a famous series of victories on Jeopardy! in 2011. If you’d like to know more, we’ve got a video with one of the computer’s fathers: Dr. Murray Campbell and a comparison on how the three supercomputers stack up after the break.
As for Garry Kasparov? The loss didn’t ruin his career, he went on to win every single Chess trophy conceived, retired, wrote some books and went into politics. As you do.

May 9th, 2012Heck, where are we going to get these from?! ( followed a second after)
Seriously, where do my kids come up with these ideas?? Of course, there are NO chess birthday invitations, OR decorations, OR party favors. So, mommy dearest took out her beloved Silhouette machine and in 30 minutes 8 invitations were made, placed and envelopes and mailed.
As they say in a very popular commercial -
Paper, glue and scissors = $15
Reaction from 9-year-old-to be = Priceless!
Can’t wait to make the cake!

Nigerian Times: Largest Chess Piece in the World Unveiled in Saint …
May 9th, 2012
The piece stands 14 feet 6 inches tall and is 6 feet wide at the base
ST. LOUIS, May 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — The Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis (CCSCSL) unveiled a Guinness World Record today – a chess piece that stands at 14 feet, 6 inches tall and is 6 feet wide at the base. The king piece is based on the “Championship Staunton” design and made of layers of 3/4 inch exterior grade plywood and is 45 times larger than a standard chess piece. This new record beat the previous record, set in 2003, by one foot, 5 inches.

The Club, in partnership with the World Chess Hall of Fame also located in Saint Louis, set the new record, helping to further cement the city’s reputation for being the hub of Chess in the United States. The piece was unveiled to kick off the 2012 U.S. and Women’s Chess Championships, which take place May 8 through May 20. This is the fourth year in a row the Club has hosted the tournaments. As part of the unveiling and tournament kickoff, Saint Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay issued an official proclamation, declaring Saint Louis the “Gateway to Chess.”
“The Saint Louis Arch was built to commemorate Saint Louis as the gateway to the west,” said CCSCSL Executive Director Tony Rich. “This record-breaking chess piece is meant to celebrate another distinction for our city. Saint Louis has truly become a center of chess culture, and this larger-than-life chess piece serves as a striking monument to honor our city’s involvement in the game.”
The piece was built by R.G. Ross Construction, located in Saint Louis, and has been officially approved by Guinness as an official world record. Some statistics about the World’s Largest Chess Piece include:
The piece took 18 days to construct and weighs more than 2,200 pounds
The piece is taller than a professional basketball hoop (10 ft.), an average size female giraffe (14 ft.) and the Statue of Liberty’s fingernail (13 ft.)
If the piece were to be used during a chess game, the board would need to be 72 feet x 72 feet, with each square being 9 feet x 9 feet, the board would be big enough to hold 392 bathtubs or nine school buses.

Digital Camera with 7x Optical Zoom Sony Cybershot DSCF828 …
May 3rd, 2012Digital Camera with 7x Optical Zoom Sony Cybershot DSCF828 Digital Camera
The Sony DSC-F828 stops for photo enthusiasts who can not shoot a lot of RAW images, a wide range available – despite some flaws.
Thanks to its left-mounted, swiveling lens and the large and relatively small housing, the Sony Cybershot DSCF828 Digital Camera , Sony, among the many currently available semi-professional cameras are easily recognizable.
If you are looking for a compact and lightweight model, keep looking, it must, as the Cyber-shot F828 with battery and media weighs about one kilogram. Compared to digital SLRs, however it is very compact, and all those who do not mind the bulky form, can take this camera with its sometimes good to use and its ergonomic advantages for themselves. By the rubber-coated grip for the right hand and the lens that is comfortable to the left, this camera feels solid and well-balanced. The lens is equipped with rings for manual adjustment of focal length and sharpness and can be rotated about 100 degrees upwards and downwards to allow for unusual angles. It consists of a magnesium alloy and plastic black case is solidly constructed – Sony Cybershot DSCF828 Digital Camera does not fragile.
If you have both hands on the camera, all controls can be reached quickly and easily. The key focus is on two easily accessible areas in which the thumb and right index fingers lie naturally to come: an area on the lens and the upper right corner at the back. Many commonly used settings can be changed via combinations of buttons and selector wheel and the other options are using a small joystick, which can operate with your right thumb, accessible from the logical, intuitive menu system. With the joystick you choose the image areas to be focused automatically. For settings that are changed less frequently, there is a separate menu, which is to be welcomed, as this menu is streamlined for the required settings during recording. But here is probably not really the place where should be the setting for the red-eye reduction, which would be abolished in the main menu for flash settings better. Also a dedicated button to adjust the light sensitivity would be to quickly react to changing light conditions have been helpful.
In addition to the selector wheel is a tiny status LCD that has some basic settings, the battery level and the number of remaining shots will be displayed. On the more useful information on the main LCD screen and electronic viewfinder of remaining battery time in minutes, a live histogram and other current settings are displayed. If you change the settings using the selection wheel, the display shows a virtual page dial that displays the options similar to its physical counterpart.
Digital Camera with 7x Optical Zoom Sony Cybershot DSCF828 Digital Camera
So far I’ve shot with Canon’s G2, a great camera that brings almost everything you could wish for an ambitious amateur photographers. But it has unfortunately also limits which I now overcome: larger focal length (zoom), better macro function, improved autofocus, shorter notice period, far easier handling (camera grip) to name the most important points. The Canon Pro1 should be the solution.
But now it has become a Sony. Without Compact Flash support I would not have considered. But if she has (!). It’s big and heavy, really bad, not as nice as portable as Canon’s Pro1. Size and weight make sure that the camera is brilliant in his hand. Shooting with this camera is a real experience.
The previously described advantages can I sign: everything brilliantly! Disadvantages: High image noise at higher ASA values. But since you only really comes around with a bigger, heavier and more expensive D-SLR drum. In this class, there is unfortunately no better. The fringes, which are often criticized are actually only in extreme situations and can usually be avoided by changing the focal length. Also, another panel can work wonders. Unfortunately, (unlike the Canon), no remote release here: 70 $cost of the fun at Sony, and it is still restricted by a cable. For long exposures, but indispensable. For the lens hood is standard equipment.
The automatic modes work very well, but to “snap”, this camera is too good. Whether fully automatic, partial automatic modes (aperture or shutter priority) or fully manual operation, the 828 delivers great results and excellent service. One must not take the part of the eye and can see all the information from the full viewfinder. Is it from Digi-Cams barely used and is very beneficial. Even the manual focussing works with the adjusting ring very precisely.
The move away from electronic back to the manual zoom is particularly welcome: Although this is the remote control at this point Matt chess, but this direct response of the zoom and the resulting short on time, special sweets.
Sony Cybershot DSCF828 Digital Camera Conclusion: While many Digi-Cams will embark on a new camera concepts and forgo traditional elements such as viewfinder, manual zoom and good ergonomics (body + lens solid) largely Sony has now returned there. Since photography is back to a wonderful hobby! If it has to be small and light is Canon’s Pro1 indeed the better choice, but who is willing to pay more to carry and enjoy photography have, which is well served with this 828!
It is not exactly spoiled when it comes to new approaches to ergonomic cameras. Since the blessed times of Oskar Barnack are innovations in this field in short supply and has come even to the parallelepiped-shaped housing, because it’s theater (small format) film somehow had to settle in front of the lens. Sony is in my opinion, with the two-part housing unit lens and camera body finally achieved a real stroke of genius.
Sony Cybershot DSCF828 Digital Camera is great in the hand and taught at vorgekipptem camera body, a feeling, as it is known more by medium-format cameras with waist. A clear win for the art work. Nevertheless, the F828 can be handled like a normal SLR and also should not be so conservative about demanding photographers.
The processing of the camera is excellent and plays at least in the class of a D100 or Canon D10 Niokon, if not it! Is a light weight so they will not be. The saturated weight helps, however, by the way, so to speak, to a much lower susceptibility to blurred images.
As it stands now the picture quality? At ISO 64 and ISO 100 is very good, resolution, contrast and color reproduction are outstanding. From ISO 200 represents a noise with increasing sensitivity, although less than in some other representative in the 8MP class, but still visible. Here, the D-SLRs, with their larger size CCD or CMOS elements have the advantage. In practice (and not at 200% magnification in Photoshop) are the results of the F828 at higher ISO Einstellunge yet easy to use.
For practicality we must not say much: reasonable focal length range (true wide angle to telephoto) at high light intensity (2-2.8), very fast and reliable autofocus, manual focal length adjustment with a large zoom ring, shutter lag as with analog SLRs, CF Card and thus suitable Microdrive, clear menus, high performance battery. Might be a little better, the electronic viewfinder, here have the right SLRs with “unverrechnetem” look through the lens remains in the lead.
My conclusion: a great camera for people who want to shoot properly and ready for the dimensions and weight of a traditional SLR increase in sales. If I could wish myself what it would be a real aperture ring and a faster internal processing of RAW files.

The Sony Cybershot DSCF828 Digital Camera camera is simply a genius. It is very comfortable to hold, even though it is somewhat difficult (almost 1 kg). The manual adjustments are made quickly and easily. All switches and buttons are the right place.
This is turn on the camera even madness. Not even a second and you can snap off. Assuming you have no Microdrive in the camera. This must indeed first boot. It is very commendable that both the F828 Memory Stick / Memory Stick Pro and Compact Flash support. Now have a 4GB Microdrive in the camera can store up to 1,100 photos on it (8MP, JPEG).
From the picture quality I am very satisfied. The store is also quite fast so that you have to wait long. In burst mode, up to 7 images are taken at once. (Max. 3 / s) and these are then saved before.
A very good feature is the manual 7x zoom. This set is compared to the normal power zoom much faster and more accurate. The AF works very fast and reliable. This is also in an instant switch from automatic to manual. The focus is on a rotating ring which is directly behind the zoom ring on the lens. Furthermore, the laser shots in the dark for the AF and Night Framing and NightShot very beneficial. Another nice touch is the electronic viewfinder. Where all information exactly as it appears on the LCD screen.
By and large, has paid off for me the transition from the Sony Cybershot DSCF828 Digital Camera on the lot.
